Younger Golfers Complain about Older Golfers
By admin on Nov 21, 2007 in Social
When my golf fanatic nephew was ten, his mother often dropped him off at a public golf course so he could play. It was also a good way for him to make new friends.
“Tell me about your new friends,” my sister-in-law asked him one day after picking him up.
“Well, Richard and Claude were pretty good golfers but not as good as he was, my nephew went on to explain.
“Where do they go to school?”
“Oh, Mom,” my nephew said while rolling his eyes, “Richard is 80 and Claude just retired.”
I’ve always thought it was great older people could get out and play golf. It‘s the one sport people of all ages can enjoy together.
Was I shocked to see a quote in the London Evening Standard concerning a golfing magazine that was complaining about older golfers.
Seems, the senior golfers were taking far too long on the links while holding up the younger, swifter golfers. And to add even more insult, these same seniors get a big discount in England.
What’s more, the magazine called the golfers “leeches” and said something needed to be done to eliminate their time on the courses.
I have one question to ask that magazine writer. Are you planning on skipping old age yourself?
Suppose all the new rules restricting senior golfers are put into place. Where will that put you in twenty of thirty years? Off the links?
It is horrible that a sports writer would be that crass toward the elderly.
But there’s hope because one considerate and compassionate young person holds the opposite view. Here’s what Scott fromTampa,Florida wrote to The Evening Standard…
“I bet there would be a lot less young people on the links had they not been shown how to play by a senior player. And we're all going to be a senior someday.”
Well put, Scott, and two of them were named Richard and Claude.
