Home Invasions Put Elderly At Risk
By admin on Sep 21, 2009 in Social
Home invasions are putting our elderly at risk, as well as younger victims.
I was struck with this reality after talking with a friend of mine tonight.
Her 84-year old next door neighbor was robbed and tied up late Sunday night. He managed to free himself a few hours later and called my friend and her husband for help.
This happened in a very nice neighborhood that backs up to a Catholic school.
It is in a sub-city of Nashville called Oak Hill and this type of crime is very rare there.
So what happened?
We can only speculate until the police catch the culprits, but I was struck by something I saw on television a few weeks ago.
A security expert was saying a lot of home robberies can be the result of people who have worked at the homes, or know someone who does work at the home.
In other words, it can often be an inside job.
We’re not saying that’s always the case, but we are advocating that you become very aware of every person who has access to your aging parents, if they live alone as this gentleman did.
You need to know who is doing the yardwork or the housework.
It is a good idea to show up frequently while work is going on, or at least make it appear as if you stop in quite a bit.
Another good security tip. Have an extra car parked in the driveway.
My next-door neighbors don’t only have one extra car, but have two parked out front. They rarely drive them. They’re there mainly to make it appear as if someone is home most of the time.
We need to keep our elderly safe and one of the best ways to do that is to think ahead and to be ready and prepared for anything these days.
