Are We Ready for Online Obituaries?

Many experts, such as Jeff Taylor of Monster.com are predicting the demise of newspaper obituaries and the rise of online obituaries.

Is this realistic and has its time come?

Yes.

Many of us are closet obit readers. I know I am. I read the obituaries from my local newspaper in Nashville, The Tennessean, everyday. They’re informative and sometimes entertaining, especially when the deceased person has written his or her own.

But they are very expensive. And I’m often left wanting to know more about the person besides their immediate survivors. Each one, after all, represents a life and a soul.

And then there’s the convenience factor. When my grandfather died on Christmas Day, 1974, his 84th birthday, it was hard trying to get the obituary into the paper on a holiday.
