Alzheimer’s, Peter Falk and Private Thoughts
By admin on Dec 17, 2008 in Social

Peter Falk’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis is very sad for me.
In fact, I’m in grief for one of my most fav actors.
What bothers me the most is that the whole devastating mess of his daughter trying to gain a conservatorship has been revealed in public for all the see.
That family’s personal business has not been kept private. Many people are now judging her motives. What qualifies them for doing that?
Celebrities’ lives are out there.
That’s one of the prices of fame. However, isn’t it time we asked the question why can’t our entertainers have privacy during their most embarrassing moments, especially as they grow older?
Who are we to laugh and gaze?
I think this hits home with a lot of us on this site because we are already dealing with these issues.
Many of us have parents with Alzheimer’s. It is not funny or curious to watch someone we admire suffer in such a way.
Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease.
It robs you of your loved one long before death. As one of my friends put it at her father’s funeral, ” I lost my Dad a long time ago.”
I’ve been a Peter fan for about as long as I can remember. I loved him in Columbo, but I really liked him as the taxi driver in It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World. That was one of the best movies I have ever seen, and I believe one of the most perfectly cast probably in Hollywood history.
I want to remember all of the people in it as they were at the top of their careers, entertaining small children like me.
Movies like that give me a home and a place to go back to. I need that right now because my neighborhood and my life are changing so fast I can’t always keep up with all the changes. Nor do I really want to.
Here’s my request. Can’t you turn the cameras off? Can’t you give Alzheimer’s sufferers the dignity and love that they deserve? Can you show some compassion?
Here’s my warning. Alzheimer’s is all too common. It could happen to you or one of your loved ones. Sometimes what goes around comes around.

I agree with your sentiment, but disagree that the cameras be turned off.
What will happen to Peter Falk as a result of this conservatorship (if successful) will be that his estate (which the family is wanting to protect) will go to “fees” for the conservatorship.
Conservatorship isn’t protection; it’s often plunder. And the epidemic is growing.
That’s something people need to know. Conservatorship is not warm and fuzzy and should only be used as a matter of last resort.

Thanks, Elaine.
This is a very important point and we all need to be prepared for these matters ahead of time – before the crisis.
