3 Ways to Help Your Lonely Parent
By admin on Dec 11, 2007 in Social

As people age, they often feel isolated.
That is partly because they can no longer drive and get out.
But isolation can also come because many of their friends have died and aging people have not always made new younger friends.
Here are 3 tips for helping your aging parents manage their loneliness.
1.Get your aging parent involved in an outside activity
This could be church, or something as simple as mall walking.
If your parents can't walk, take them to the mall in a wheelchair.
For the aging parent who like crafts, get her into some small crafting group or activity. Even if she can only watch others make crafts it will be something she can enjoy.
Does your aging parent like sports?
If he is still able, take him to a ballgame.
If that's not possible, arrange to have several people over to watch a game and include your parent.
The point is to give your parents a chance to interact with others, which is what is most needed.
2.Provide a pet
Pets are great therapy for older people.
A small quiet dog or cat may provide hours of companionship your parent so desperately needs.
Also, how about considering a rabbit?
Your aging parent needs to love and be loved and any kind of animal can give them that opportunity.
But here's a new twist.
If having an animal is out, how about an aquarium?
Fish are fascinating to watch and can become pets. Ask any fish tank enthusiast.
Watching fish can also be very restful for your parents and will help reduce stress.
3. Give your parent a chance to help others
This is probably the most important tip of all.
A basic human need is to be needed.
Your parent may be missing his or her role as a caregiver.
Give them the opportunity to give a Christmas present to a needy child.
Even if your parent can't shop, buy the gift online and include your parent in the process.
When the gift arrives, maybe your parent could help wrap it, or at least help pick out the ribbon and paper.
Take your parent with you when you go to deliver the gift.
There are many ways you can help your parents combat loneliness.
But the major idea is to get your parents involved with others and to give them a sense of purpose.
After all, isn't that what we all need?
