Is Age Really a Problem for Important Jobs?

Geriatrician Dr. Greg Sachs takes on the issue of presidential candidate McCain’s age. Is he too old to run for president?

In a round about way, I think he is saying ‘no’.

Regardless of our political leaning or those of Dr. Sachs, I think he is right.

Older people have a tremendous amount of experience and good to contribute to a youth orientated society.

Hence, the problem.

We think too youthfully. We tend to write people off after they reach what we consider old age.

Dr. Sachs brings up an interesting question. Who is really old?

He points out aging is as individual as the person. People age at different paces and in different ways. A lot of it has to do with the person’s genes.

And yes, it’s okay to ask the tough questions of older people holding important jobs such as CEO of a major Fortune 500 Company of CEO of a country. However, why not take advantage of the lifetime of experience and wisdom older seniors can bring to such jobs?

But at the same time we have to ask are such older seniors up to the tasks physically and mentally?
