Health Care Plan: How Will It Affect Our Aging Parents?

Health care plan: how will it affect our aging parents?  Or, how will it affect us?

Frankly, we don’t know yet.  What we do know is it will be expensive.  Most likely taxes will  go up, probably on the state level.

But here’s one of the most disturbing situations some of us have already been experiencing.  Some doctors are not treating medicare and medicaid patients.  It is getting increasingly harder  to find a doctor if you’re over 80. Or to keep one.

Our doctor is now charging an extra $2,000 per patient per year to get his full attention and his phone number.  This is one of the ways some doctors will be fighting back as they claim it is necessary  in order to stay in practice.  Of course, you can still opt for his plain service which doesn’t include the phone number and very little explanation for tests.  And you won’t get to wait in the nicer waiting room.

We have an 80- year old friend who is diabetic  who has also had a very difficult time finding a new doctor.  Fortunately, he now has a good one as he lies in Vanderbilt Hospital tonight suffering from bad circulation to his foot.  We were afraid his condition would worsen, but he is doing better.  But it took a lot of effort for him to find this doctor after having been turned down by several.

Our fears are for our seniors and  for ourselves because  one of these days we will also be counted amongst the elderly.   If many of us are apprehensive about this giant  bill that is over 2000 pages long from Washington there are good reasons why.
