10 Tips for Preventing Falls
By admin on Dec 13, 2007 in Health
Falls are the leading cause of accidental deaths and serious injuries for aging seniors over 65.
Facts are 30 percent of the people in this group will fall this year.
But it doesn't have to be like that. Falls are not a natural part of aging.
Not only are falls dangerous, but they are unnecessary and can be prevented with a common sense approach for senior safety.
1.Use a rubber mat in the tub and shower.
2.Wipe up all spills and keep bathroom floor dry at all times.
3.Install good bright lighting throughout the house.
4. Keep a small square step stool available and encourage your aging parent to use it for reaching.
5. Use non-skid floor wax.
6. Install handrails on stairs.
7.Make sure all gardening tools, pet items, newspapers and anything else that may clutter a floor are out of the way.
8.Never wear reading glasses while walking up or down stairs.
9. Get rid of small rugs and scatter mats.
10. Encourage your senior parent to get out of bed slowly and not suddenly. That could cause unnecessary dizziness.
There are many ways a fall tragedy, and the loss of independence that comes with it, can be prevented. By thinking ahead you can do a lot toward making your aging parents' home safe and fall-proof.
