When Family Members Refuse to Visit Aging Parents

Family members refusing to visit aging parents in nursing homes is a very big problem.
Carol Bradley Bursack addresses it quite openly in her book Minding Our Elders.
The problem is really this. One or two family members end up with all, or most of the caregiving responsibilities while others can’t, or won’t help.
There are lots of reasons for this, which Carol explores, but one of the biggest culprits is the family member’s refusal to face the elderly person’s failing condition.
I like Carol’s comment…”The issue is that her mother needed her adult daughter to act like an adult and visit her.”
Of course we all want our lives in nice neat packages, complete with our memories of how it used to be, but unfortunately, life doesn’t always work like that. Our parents are growing weaker, not stronger, and some of us have to step in in role reversals.
Instead on thinking so much about ourselves, such as the daughter who refused to visit her mother in the nursing home, we need to put our elderly first.
Making our aging parents as comfortable and as happy as possible should be our main goal. After all, we absolutely don’t want any regrets later.
