Is Cheerios a Drug or a Cereal?
By admin on May 13, 2009 in Family
Cheerios as a drug? Or is it still a cereal?
The FDA thinks it should be classified as a drug because the makers of Cheerios are stating such health claims as it can lower cholesterol by 10 percent in one month's time.
Interesting.
We eat a lot of Cheerios at my house. In fact, we've been buying it by the big box load from Sam's Warehouse for several years now.
I had no idea the simple "kid's" cereal that many a teeny little munchkin has munched on in church and on planes was really a drug.
Does that mean it could be dangerous? That we need a prescription to eat it, should I say, or take it?
I don't know about you, but our world just got a kitten's whisker more complicated, I'm afraid.
So what about this controversy? Does Cheerios actually lower cholesterol or not?
Apparently there is some truth to the company's statements.
This is not just a Madison Avenue exergeration. Many proclaim it actually helps lower cholesterol, as does our other ole favorite breakfast friend, Quaker Oats.
The FDA just doesn't want the company to say that.
Huh?
Either Cheerios does help lower cholesterol or it doesn't. Isn't that the point?
Not.
So now what?
Team Obama has given the makers of Cheerios a very short time to straighten it all out.
Does that mean they'll be changing their advertising campaigns to something that will resemble those ridiculous drug commercials?
You know the commercials with the cello background music with people at lakes and in parks holding up big signs just in case you're too dumb to get the name of that new expensive prescription drug so you can demand it the next time you go to the doctor…
Whew. Somehow I can't picture that working for Cheerios, but I'm going to keep on eating it anyway.

I've decided I'm not going to allow a bureaucrat or two to come between me and my cereal bowl.
Stay tuned to this controversy. I have a feeling there will be more to come.

Watch those ads!!!! The Cheerios box once claimed 60% reduction, then it changed to 30%. I personally prefer oatmeal. The less its processed, the healthier food tends to be.
