Hospitals Frighten Elderly

Here’s a hospital horror story from the U.K.Before those of us in America feel too smugly, that it can’t happen in the U.S., we need to think again. It can happen everywhere.

The daughter who wishes to remain anonymous and for good reason, tells about the very bad care her 90- year- old mother received after heart surgery.

My 85- year-old aunt got out of a “prestigious hospital” in Nashville yesterday and the experience has left her shaken.

We admit she received very good care, but there were still problems.

She was scheduled to received a test and could not eat or drink before it was to be administered.

They kept rescheduling it all day, and she lingered in her hospital bed without food or water. She called me around 1 PM in distress asking me to bring her big print Bible.

Finally, she was given the test around 2 PM.

Later, my uncle revealed two policemen arrived and guarded a patient across the hall all night. This was even more unsettling for my aunt.

We forget that there is more to good care than just the physical. There is the emotional. That probably hinders more people from healing than just about anything.

Being in the hospital is never routine for the patient and can be a frightening experience, especially for our elderly.
