Aging Parents' Real Estate Crisis: Will It Happen To You?
By admin on Aug 26, 2009 in Family
There is an increasingly alarming real estate crisis affecting aging parents.
Some elderly are losing their homes to foreclosure. This puts more strain upon their children.
But realtor Rebecca Skane raises another bombshell.
How do you manage two households- your own and that of your aging parents?
This can sometimes get harrowing even if they live close by.
There are always the wild card schedule killers such as doctors' appointments, grocery shopping, and house cleaning.
Rebecca offers the in-law apartment solution.
Okay, I know what you're thinking.
But why not give it a chance?
It may not be for everyone but I believe it will work more often if people would try it.
I know first hand because my parents and I are doing it.
I live at the house and I am able to help take care of the house (and yard).
I can see that the cooking is done and try to fix good healthy things for them. ( They like my catfish dinner and my fried chicken salad.)
Most importantly, I'm able to be there in case of an emergency. You will have a lot more of those as your parents get older. (My father has fallen several times in the last year.)
The secret for making this work is that everyone has their own separate living quarters. That gives you privacy and you can have your own life.

My mother has her own appartment in my sister's home in Carmel, Indiana. There are many advantages as mentioned above, but there can be downsides if the people who visit are not respectful of the home owners privacy when visiting the elderly person. Just a thought for consideration.
