Fortunately after being gagged with duck tape and driven around in the back of her small cross over car, Natalie’s life was save by a vigilant police officer who pulled the teens over on a traffic violation.

See details Beating Elderly Victim

What could possibly be more outragious?

Suspect Jeffrey Edward Nelson, 19, rolling his eyes as accusations against him were being read in court.

At least 18-year old Antoinette Baker showed a little more humanity as she shook while her bail was being set at $2 million dollars. My guess is she was not fearful for her vicitim whom doctors reported as having had a heart attack during the ordeal.

I’ve always been amazed at our strange criminal system which allows criminals such as these to thrive on our weakest people. But I have a feeling things will be different this time. These kids will have the book thrown at them.

But here’s where it gets particurlay chilling. Natalie knew at least one of her attackers. He had just sold her a vacuum cleaner a few days before. He had returned to make his trusting customer his victim.

This brings us to the question of how can we protect our elderly from this type of home invasion crime?

Where do we go for help with eldercare? What can we do if we're still working and we have to take care of our aging parents?

We’ve often talked about why we need to give elder care to our aging parents as they grow more elderly.
What about the how?
How exactly do we do provide family eldercare when we’re still working, strapped for cash, dealing with massive healthcare costs, and a recession?

I’ve said this before. The government is not helping us very much. It is mostly hindering us.
We need practical common sense solutions we can work with. We don’t need more bureaucratic nightmares.
The example of 84- year old Betty Gresick proves my point.
Betty is still healthy and wants to earn a little extra income. She plays the piano for a local church during their services. The meager pay she receives is now being deducted from her Social Security.
Don’t get me started. I promised myself I would not rant.
But there’s more…
The numbers of aging parents moving in with their adult children needing eldercare resources are growing; 67 percent since 2000.
That means we need help and eldercare services now.
Help we can actually use.
Fortunately some private companies are listening.
I’m not here to do commercials for them. You have to do your research and due diligence to make sure you get the best plan, but they’re listening.
Among them are Harris Private Bank and Oppenheimer Funds, Inc.
Also some companies are now offering eldercare benefits for their employees. This is a bold move and will pay off in spades for those companies, I believe.
If they can help us with our needs we can be better, more productive employees. You can’t put a price tag on that.
All of this is only a start. We need more help and some of us are going to need it very soon.

for the elderly requires lots of patience.
That's very excruciatingly hard for some of us, especially me. I'm not a patient person by nature, but I'm trying. It's just that I fail so often.

Caring for the elderly requires lots of patience.

That’s very excruciatingly hard for some of us, especially me. I’m not a patient person by nature, but I’m trying. It’s just that I fail so often.

Nothing is more difficult for me than to be ready to go somewhere and having to wait an extra 30 minutes while my Mom finishes getting ready. Then there’s the ritual of checking everything in the house such as the stove and iron to make sure nothing is still on. She always fears the house will burn down before we can get back. I don’t know why. It’s never happened.

But I was talking to a close friend of mine who has two parents in an assisted living facility. He had taken his one day off, a Saturday, to do errands with them. (Actually it is much easier to do errands without them, but as we know, they want to get out and go.)

He said after four hours of such tasks as taking them to the grocery store, they were finally arriving back at the facility where the front entrance was being painted with sand mixed with the paint. That was because the area was slippery and dangerous for the elderly to walk over, and they were trying to fix that as quickly as possible.

My friend saw the “wet paint” signs and warned his father who got out of the car first, not to walk through the wet paint on the sidewalk.

“My dad went right straight through the paint on his walker trailing the paint as he shuffled inside,” my friend said.

“Then the next thing I noticed before I could stop her, my mom was on her walker doing the very same thing. They both got wet paint smeared all over the place. My nerves were already shot from the trip to the grocery store. All I could do was throw up my hands.”

How many of us have felt the same way?

As we talked another friend pointed out that there simply isn’t enough help out there for those of us caring for our aging parents. We need more advice. We need help.

That’s the main reason for this site.

I think we’re here to help each other. Please write in and share your stories and your frustrations. If we’re all going to be honest with ourselves there are moments of total desperation, but thankfully those moments never last long.

You have no children and very few relatives.
What can you do now to insure you will be well taken care of should you become disabled or incapacitated?
Will there be someone you can trust who will see to your personal needs or elderly home care?
Who will be in charge of your money?
Will you have an advocate to handle medical and assisted living situations?
Fortunately there are lots of options for you. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette has some good answers which mention several ways you can stay in control of your destiny as you reach your later years.
One option is to get a geriatric-care manager or geriatric specialist.
