We’re Always On Call with Our Aging Parents

elder care, eldercare, aging parentsJournalist Paula Span has brought out a very important elder care point in “We Are Not the Boss of Them.”

She goes on to discuss one of our biggest problems we experience with our aging parents in her book, When the Time Comes: Families with Aging Parents Share Their Struggles and Solutions.
Basically what she advises is our parents are going to do pretty much what they want to do as long as they are able.

I was reminded of that Saturday when my 83-year old father drove the lawnmower backwards into a 5 and 1/2 foot concrete ditch.

He only had a few sratches on his neck, in spite of the fact the lawnmower was perpendicular and the motor was still running.

He managed to turn it off and climb out, a little shaken, but after he had had a shower and lunch he was okay.

My brother, nephew and tenants managed to get the lawnmower out and believe it or not, it still runs fine. They finished cutting the grass.

I was afraid you wouldn’t believe my story, but honest it’s true.

But we’re always on call, as Paula writes.
