Disturbing Granny Dumping Case Calls For New Legislation
By admin on Jun 25, 2009 in Care
It’s being referred to as Granny Dumping.
That’s when an elderly person is abandoned by uncaring family members.
A disturbing case from Florida illustrates this heartless disposal of our elderly.
I call them “our elderly.”
That’s because as citizens we can not allow the abuse of helpless senior citizens to continue.
This family left their 96-year old aunt at a Salvation Army Center in Bradenton, Florida, so they could go to Disney World.
They did not return for her.
What is ironic here is that this family cares for foster children.
I must question their compassion level for helpless children as we compare their lack of care and attention displayed toward the old aunt.
Folks, I know it can get rough.
I attented a wedding Saturday afternoon where the grandmother of the bride, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, did not recognize her own daughter who had flown in from Boston.
“Did I know you in St. Louis?” the mother asked her daughter. (They had once lived in St. Louis while the children were growing up).
These scenes wound us all, because frankly, it can get way too close for us. But we have no excuses. We have been given our assignments by God to care for our aging parents . I was gratified to see this family at the wedding lovingly caring for their mother.
That’s why I’m glad to see the calls for legistlation for those uncaring faimlies who refuse to take care of their elderly.
