Sometimes guaranteeing  that your aging parents  receive the very best attention means  moving  them in with you.

How can you make such a move smooth and pleasant?  

1. Prepare a private room, or rooms, for your parent.

This is  just as important for everyone else in the household as it is for your  aging parent.

Everyone needs  privacy.  Your parent will also need quiet, down time where he can go to read, nap or watch T.V.

 Is your parent’s room downstairs for easy asses? 

Many older people often have trouble climbing stairs. 

If your mom is deaf, will her television disturb your kids who are trying to study?

There are lots of creative ways to deal with problems like that such as buying a set of headphones for your mom.

2. Prepare all other family members for the move

Don’t assume anything.  Just because your teenagers shrug and  act like having granddad or grandmother moving in is no big deal, chances are they’ll soon change their minds.

Teens may not understand the needs of their grandparents. 

So maybe this is a good time to give them a crash course in unselfishness. 

However, try to talk to your kids with sensitivity.  After all, you don’t want your teens to feel like they are being pushed out  of the nest too early.   

3. Prepare your parents for living in your household

Will your aging parent be able to adjust to your lifestyle?

Let’s face it, each generation is different and more puzzling.

Your aging parents may not completely  understand you or your kids. 

What if your job sends you out of town a lot?  Can your parent adjust to that?

Will your parent be able to get along with your friends and the friends of your children?

 Sharing your home with your aging parents can be a very rewarding experience.

But like many other things in life, it will probably involve some degree of  compromise from everyone to make it work smoothly. 

Dealing with the issues ahead of time will better prepare you and your family.

Then you’ll have more time  to give meaningful quality to your aging parents’ final years.
