3 Reasons Why Adult Day Care is Gaining Popularity

Yesterday we talked about some of the  most serious problems with nursing homes.  Since the government is cracking down on elder abuse in nursing homes are there other alternatives for your aging parents?

Adult day care may be a good option if you want more supervision over your aging parents' care, but you don't want to put them in a nursing home.

Not only are adult day care centers exploding with 4,000 located throughout the country, but estimates are there will be many more built in the future.

That is primarily because of new funding from such sources as  Medicaid waiver programs which give families part-time day care as an option to full- time, long term institutional care.

Here are several reasons why this type of care is being  favored by more caregivers.

1. Caregivers are able to work  outside the home and  keep their jobs

This is very important when caregiving could interfer with the household income.

2. Caregivers are given a break from their responsibilities.

If your parent has Alzheimer's or a form of dementia the extra time without them during the day could be a godsend.  Caregivers who need some time of their own should not feel guilty.  In fact, you may need this time in order to maintain your own health and wellbeing.  You won't be able to help your parents if you are too stressed out.

3. Adult day care centers give aging parents a place to go to be around others and have interesting activities which can be stimulating.

This beats listlessly sitting in front of a television all day.  Besides everyone needs a social life.

Adult day care is an alternative well worth looking into.
