How to Avoid Long Term Care Nightmares

Ronni Bennet has an eye opening review of the powerful book by gerontologist Robert L. Kane and his sister Joan C. West.  The book is Shouldn't Be This Way:The Failure of Long-Term Care.

 

Their story is a firsthand "harrowing" account of what it is really like to search for good long term care for an ailing loved one.  In this case Kane and West were experiencing the search for their own mother.

What are some of the common long term care traps we should avoid?

Beware of the Assisted Living Sales Office 

Instead, demand  to see the actual room where your loved one will be living.

Remember the nose test

Wrong smells such as urine- leave immediately.  Overpowering odors such as disinfectants- well, we all know what that really means.  Find the door fast.
