GROW Group Wants to Keep Elderly Out of Wheelchairs

Every time I visit a nursing home, I'm  struck by the number of people sitting in wheelchairs.  Not only is it depressing, but  according to some experts, it's unnecessary.

In fact, there is a growing movement to keep the elderly population out of wheelchairs as long as possible, which can help build their self esteem.

This is not always easy, especially if the older people are in the habit of sitting in their wheelchairs for long periods of time.

However,  evidence is growing that encouraging more normal activities such as  the simple act of  sitting in a regular chair can help delay a feeling of helplessness, which can often plague the elderly.
