More Nursing Homes Losing Federal Funding, Part 2
By admin on Dec 15, 2007 in Care
As we pointed out yesterday, some nursing homes across the country are losing Medicare and Medicaid funding which is forcing them to close. States are concerned about nursing home violations and are getting more strict about the way residents are treated.
As a result, many elderly people are being displaced. It is not uncommon for families to have to move their loved ones to new nursing homes many miles away. This addional travel can cause more hardships.
Many of these families will have to spend more time on the road instead of visiting with their elderly parents. Visits will have to be cut back because family members often can not travel as often, especially during the weekdays.
But here's another factor.
Nursing home residents may not want to move. They may like the nursing home they were living in and a move could prove very traumatic.
Steve Gill, who's mother Gloria was forced to move from McKendrie Manor in Nashville, is very concerned about how she will be able to cope.
"She love McKendrie," he tells the Tennessean. That's where her friends are. It's an emotional rollercoaster."
Then there's the addional problem of not being able to find a place for your elderly loved one to go.
Scott Anderson, who's mother will also be forced to leave McKendrie, tells the Tennessean that he's checked over 70 nursing homes so far and cannot find a bed for his mother within a three hours drive.
Nursing home closing are certainly difficult for everyone involved.
But the big question is would you really want your aging parents to be in a nursing home that doesn't meet the state's minimum requirements?
