What to Do if Your Aging Parents Become Crime Victims

I'll never forget the story about  the elderly mother  of one of my college teachers.

She was at the mall, in a Mercedes, and a young woman ordered her to get out of the car.  She was taking it along with her purse.

The small elderly lady fought back, chased off the assailant ,who was much larger in size, and kept the car and the purse.

Unfortunately,  most of our senior citizens are not that lucky.  And when they do become crime victims it is usually a care giver or someone they know committing the theft.

This problem is compounded because many  elderly people  are more reluctant than any other age group  not to report a crime.  That  is often out of embarrassment.

But police tell us they have special units set up especially for crimes against the aged.  They are trained to gently work with elderly victims and help them remember the facts which will assist in  catching scammers and criminals.

This is very important because stopping such criminals will keep them from victimizing others.

Susan Kostal has a very good article on what to do if your aging parents become crime victims.

She goes into quite a bit of detail on what to expect from the police and the court system.
