No More Colorectal Cancer Screening After Age 75
By admin on Oct 7, 2008 in Family
It’s certainly good news that a government task force is recommending no more colorectal cancer screening after you reach age 75. (It your tests have been negative through the years)
Why?
The dangers of the testing far outweigh the benefits, according to the task force.
I’ll second that.
There are problems which we are all too aware of such as risks of infection, perforated colon, and reaction to sedatives.
It is not an easy procedure, and let’s face it, many people elect not to go through with it because of the difficulties, horror of it and the downright embarrassment. As far as I’m concerned some of these tests came straight out of the Gestapo torture handbook.
Are there alternatives?
Yes, I think there will be- in the future.
The virtual colonoscopy is showing promise. It can already detect 90 percent of precancerous polyps 10 millimeters or larger. That’s pretty good, but maybe it could be better and perhaps it will be.
But I don’t know, I was kind of letting my imagination run wild as my 82 -year- old Dad was having to prepare for a sigmoidscopy tomorrow, and I was thinking there has to be an easier way.
What about this idea?
We all have heard of the pillcams, right?
You know those are the miniature cameras you swallow and they take pictures all the way as they’re going down.
If those cameras can photograph the inside of your stomach, intestines, etc, why can’t someone come up with a camera that can photograph the colon from the inside?
Wouldn’t that be a whole lot easier? Wouldn’t people be more inclined to cooperate?
And we’re aware the pill camera just moves on out of you like any other waste product your body needs to get rid of, so why not?
Am I too far off on this?
Write in and let me know…
