Skyrocketing Elderly Populations Causing Problems and Challenges
By admin on Jun 5, 2008 in Social
Scotland is facing the same ‘crisis’ America is as elderly populations continue to skyrocket.
I came across this report from Edinburgh this morning and I’m reminded how we all need to prepared for our futures and the futures of our aging parents now.
The problem in Scotland is more and more of the elderly will be reliant on the state and all those services were based on the demongrpahics which haven’t really been updated since World War II. Sound familiar?
Here in America we’re having the same problems as our elderly live longer.
I visited beautiful Edinburgh a few years ago and it doesn’t seem to be a city well adapt for the elderly. It is fast paced, exciting, and hilly. The weather can change suddenly but it has to be one of the most picturesque cities in the world, as is the entire country of Scotland. I was cold most of the time and we were there in August, but I’m southern and I’m used to a hotter, more humid climate.
But climate aside, I think Edinburgh is a city that would be hard for the elderly to get around. At least that was my impression. In a way, my own hometown of Nashville fits the same description and maybe your town does too. Nashville is also very hilly and is generally not a good place for walkers, especially elderly ones.
What I’m really saying is many of us worldwide are not ready for the elderly challenge. We need to prepare now. We need to think about transportation, food, and medical services as our skyrocketing elderly populations move toward a meltdown crisis.
