No More Mouth-to-Mouth Resuscitation

The latest news from the American Heart Association is that you no longer  have to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in order to save a heart attack victim before medical help arrives.

This is good news because many bystanders have been reluctant to lock lips with victims they don't know.

The new guidelines are to do hands- only CPR, which can possibly double the rate of survival until medical help arrives.

It's very important that we all learn how to do this particularly as we care for our aging parents. It could save their lives.

One warning: You must still do mouth to mouth with a child suffering from cardiac arrest (rare, but sometimes happens) and drowning victims. Reason? They usually don't have oxygen left in their bloodstreams.
